I think the results speak for themselves... but since you asked me to brag about the mad skillz of our team, I will happily oblige...
First: sketch and design
- Although we had specific tools and resources, we began by considering what would keep the egg safe, and allow for shock
- We then sketched thinking of the materials
- We began with a tripod like triangular shape
- We decided we needed to enhance the base to a pyramid to ensure it landed safely
Second: reviewed resources to ensure we'd have sufficient straws and tape to execute our design
- During this analysis we decided that if/when we needed to make cuts, they would need to be right
- Original design left 1 straw remaining for error or changed during construction
- We also determined that we'd need to find a way to stretch the tape supply and decided we'd need to cut it in half
Third: create a paper proto-type
- using paper, we built a '4-D' prototype of our structure, using the dimensions of the straws and egg
- Seeing the vision we were able to make the needed modifications to ensure maximum protection while utilizing the available resources
Fourth: expand our recourses
- Building the prototype took us almost 8 minutes... and knowing we'd have only 10 minutes, and needed to cut the tape and straws, we set out to find scissors
Fifth: execute the build
- Team members 1 & 2 were primary engineers on the build with support from member 3
- Team member 4 wrote out our team page along with a sketch - making plan modifications as changes were made
Sixth: show you all how incredibly awesome we are!!
- You were there... I don't need to tell you
- I've never claimed to be humble...
Two things we didn't do:
- Assign a team leader: In this group dynamic I don't think we needed one. We were all behind the goal, and motivated to achieve it. We brainstormed until we had a consensus as to how we should execute and every team member contributed; adding value throughout the process.
- Consider alternatives: We were happy with our original design, but we found a need to make some modifications during the build. If I were to do a similar task I might have explore structural alternatives prior to building.
So, now you know how to be AMAZING! Take it in... chew on it... you'll get here.

Congrats!!! your right. I was there and it was a thrill to watch your egg drop and survive. The design looked way cool and don't worry, our group will give you a run for your money in the next project :-).
ReplyDeletebingo :-)) Very nice and the result explain everything... You guys did a wonderful setup ..no doubt that the design itself makes one to admire your work ...
ReplyDeletecongratulation guys :-))
Well said. We all had an important role and we did not need a leader to pressure us to get the job done and done correctly. When I got on that table all I could think about was my team members.... I had to make sure the egg falls inside the recycling bin and it does not break. I felt nervous and pressured but I knew it was time to let it go.
ReplyDeleteIt was the best class project so far and I hope we get many more in the near future. :)
Well I guess congratulations are in order. So congrats!! You guys obviously managed your time and tools wisely. (why do I feel obligated to throw some variation of the word manage in all these posts??) I'm glad the winner accepted her victory humbly and graciously lol
ReplyDeleteWell, lets say something different here then :)
ReplyDeleteGood job. Very elegant design in such short term, team members are look very happy and excited in this picture. And I am really amazed how you all had already thought about success picture taken for the blogging. Very thoughtful indeed.
congrats on winning the points, i was disappointed that my group did not follow this similar idea that i suggested! but what can you do, hopefully we get more chances to win points !
ReplyDeletegood job on winning I was disappointed that my group didn't succeed in this task but you can't cry over broken eggs. We had followed a similar plan without making the model out of paper and our design was similar just not as well executed maybe next time if there is one I guess.
ReplyDeleteUGH! The one Blog of yours I did NOT want to comment on but still felt compelled to do so...
ReplyDeleteCongratulations! Your planning process was complete and successful! I think the confidence and motivation in every team member was essential to your success. In my group, there was doubt from the start. However, we still managed to put together some sort of plan and hope for the best. Assigning each member a role was a great idea because it kept everyone focused.
Again, congrats on a complete plan and unharmed egg. :)
congrats on completing the egg task. judging by your blog, you seem to be really thorough with the process. you guys were lucky to have a small group. it was probably a lot easier to get your thoughts across. good job :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that at least one group survived the challenge successfully. I must say, I have to agree with you on the fact that having a small group had to be beneficial, because that was one of the difficult task for our group. It was difficult to involve all 10 people in our group together. When we got the egg finally, we had too many hands all over the egg our design and everything else went out the door.
